We could stop importing oil from the Middle East today if we wanted to.

So pretty much, we buy oil from Friendly Nation-istan. Europe, which was buying from Friendly Nation-istan, now has to buy from Saudi Arabia. Since oil is a global commodity, that means that Saudi Arabia gets the same amount of money, the... oil tankers just head for a different port.

The only way to throttle the flow of cash to the terror-magnates is to find alternative fuel sources. Reduce the demand, and we can pick-and-choose who gets to sell oil. Otherwise, we're just playing games, pretending that we're making a difference.

Yitzhak Shamir, hawkish Israeli premier, dies

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Yitzhak Shamir, the hawkish Israeli leader who balked at the vision promoted by the United States of trading occupied land for peace with the Palestinians, died on Saturday after a long illness. He was 96.

The second longest-serving prime minister after Israel's founder David Ben-Gurion, Shamir clung to the status quo. Admirers saw strength and resolve in his position, while critics called him an intransigent naysayer who allowed Arabs to cast Israel as obstructing the road to peace.

"Yitzhak Shamir belonged to the generation of giants that founded the State of Israel and fought for the freedom of the Jewish people in its own land," Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a statement after his death.

Shamir professed a commitment to peace, calling it "the only prize ... that can justify any war," but insisted Israel never be rushed into a deal or lose its nerve.

"Big countries, I told myself, can afford to make mistakes; small ones cannot," he wrote in his memoir "Summing Up".

Born in Poland with the surname Yezernitzky, Shamir moved to British-ruled Palestine before the Holocaust, in which his family died. Steely and secretive, he ran missions against British and Arab targets for the hardline Jewish underground group Irgun, taking his Hebrew name from an alias used to evade police dragnets.

Captured and deported to Eritrea in 1946, the diminutive, beetle-browed Shamir missed much of the fighting that led to Israel's founding two years later. Upon his return, he found himself out of step with the country's left-leaning political leadership of the day.

The Mossad spy service provided Shamir a back door to power. Recruited in 1955, Shamir clambered up the Mossad's ranks during shadow wars with Middle East foes and international hunts for Nazi fugitives.

He credited a posting in France with lending some refinement to his style - "the scenery, the way people looked, the food, the wine, Piaf," he would later say - and prepared him for his 1980 breakthrough as foreign minister for the rightist Likud party.

Shamir was a distrustful diplomat. Prime Minister Menachem Begin had signed a landmark peace accord with Egypt in 1979, yet Shamir bristled at Cairo's insistence that Israel make way for Palestinian independence.

"Judea and Samaria are an integral part of the land of Israel, neither 'captured' ... nor 'returnable' to anyone," he said, using biblical terms for the occupied West Bank.

Ruined by Israel's 1982 Lebanon invasion, Begin resigned and was succeeded by Shamir, who would later enter an awkward coalition with Shimon Peres' left-wing Labour party in which the two leaders rotated the premiership between them.

It was a time of turbulence in Israeli politics and life. Shamir was forced to crack down on challenges from a new Jewish underground made up of West Bank settlers, who attacked Arab notables and a Jerusalem mosque, and from the first Intifada, or Palestinian uprising, which erupted in 1987.

Rather than seek accommodation with the Palestinians, Shamir championed new settlements and the immigration of hundreds of thousands of Soviet and Ethiopian Jews in a bid to maintain Israel's Jewish demographic identity.

Although known as a hardliner, Shamir nonetheless showed teeth-gritting restraint during the 1991 Gulf War. At the urging of the United States, he held Israel's fire in the face of Scud missile salvoes by dictator Saddam Hussein rather than retaliate and endanger the U.S. alliance with Arab powers battling to expel Iraq from Kuwait.

His forbearance on that occasion drove home Israel's subordination to Washington's Middle East interests.

"I can think of nothing that went more against my grain as a Jew and a Zionist, nothing more opposed to the ideology on which my life has been based, than the decision I took ... to ask the people of Israel to accept the burden of restraint," Shamir said later.

After the war, U.S. President George H.W. Bush called on Israel to accept multi-party peace talks with the Arabs. His administration drove home the demand by postponing $10 billion in U.S. loan guarantees that the Shamir government needed to absorb new immigrants.

Shamir hinted darkly that Bush, leader of the country's most important ally, was an anti-Semite but relented on attending the Madrid peace conference, where he became the first Israeli leader to sit opposite Palestinian, Syrian, Jordanian and Lebanese delegates.

The event was short on reconciliation -- Shamir spoke of peace with only "self-government" for the Palestinians -- but paved the way for the bilateral negotiations pursued by Labour's Yitzhak Rabin, who rode a wave of Israeli optimism to defeat Shamir in a 1992 election.

Shamir was infirm and withdrawn from public life in later years. With Likud back in power and his former deputy foreign minister Netanyahu as premier, Israel remains at loggerheads with the Palestinians, with many disputes still festering.

"The truth is that, in the final analysis, the search for peace has always been a matter of who would tire of the struggle first, and blink," he wrote in his autobiography.

Europe weighing Italian, Spanish debt relief

European leaders are weighing the possibility of using the eurozone?s financial rescue fund to make direct debt purchases from Italy and Spain as a way to ease the surging borrowing costs both countries are faced with on the world?s financial markets.

European heads of state were engaged in sharp discussions Thursday in Brussels, their 20th summit on the continent?s unrelenting debt crisis. They were under new pressure to calm international financial markets wary about the fate of the euro currency and at the same time ease the financial burden for debt-ridden Italy and Spain.

Both Rome and Madrid, with the eurozone?s third and fourth largest economies, have watched in recent days as the interest rates on their loans have soared to near the 7 percent level. That is the mark at which much smaller Greece, Ireland and Portugal all were forced to secure international bailouts in the last two years.

If Italy and Spain used the eurozone?s bailout fund for their debt sales, it could cut their borrowing costs because they no longer would be subject to the whims of speculators on world markets.

Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy warned this week that his government will not be able to sustain its high borrowing costs for much longer. He won support from French President Francois Hollande, who said as he arrived at the summit that he was looking for ?very quick solutions? to support Italy and Spain.

EU economics chief Olli Rehn predicted that the European leaders would adopt measures to calm financial markets and help Italy and Spain.

?I trust that we will have a possibility to take decisions in the European summit that will help to stabilize the financial markets in the short term, and help to reduce borrowing costs of countries like Italy and Spain. This is one element of our comprehensive crisis response that should be decided in the summit.?

European Council President Herman Van Rompuy said the continent?s leaders need to act quickly.

?Reviving growth in our economies and creating jobs, especially for young people, requires immediate action. Restoring confidence in our currency calls for stability today and a credible perspective for the future.?

Efforts to ease the plight of Italy and Spain overtook the initial summit focus on Germany, which has the currency bloc?s most robust economy.

Some European leaders are advocating the sale of eurobonds, debt supported by the entire 17-nation eurozone, not just individual governments. But Berlin has opposed their adoption, fearing that its borrowing costs could jump even as those for weaker governments drop.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel this week called eurobonds ?economically wrong and counterproductive.? But finance minister Wolfgang Schaeuble signaled Germany may be shifting in its adamant opposition.

He told a U.S. business publication,?The Wall Street Journal, that Germany could agree to some form of shared eurozone debt if it is convinced that the move toward central European control over the spending practices of the eurozone?s individual governments is ?irreversible and well-coordinated.? He said there would be no common bonds ?without a common fiscal policy.?

The summit could endorse a new $162 billion package to boost the eurozone?s stagnant economy, which Ms. Merkel says she supports. The figure amounts to about 1 percent of the eurozone economy, but the effect of the spending is uncertain because most of the money had already been earmarked for development projects.

(AP) ? Actress Doris Singleton, who played one of Lucy and Ricky Ricardo's lesser-known neighbors on "I Love Lucy," has died. She was 92.

Lucie Arnaz, daughter of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, confirmed the death in a post on her Facebook page. Singleton died Tuesday, the same day as writer-director Nora Ephron, and Arnaz acknowledged them both in her post, writing, "They were loved and appreciated and will be missed."

Singleton's death also was reported by Variety and the Hollywood Reporter.

Her character, first called Lillian Appleby and then Caroline Appleby, appeared in 10 episodes. She was Lucy's neighbor, the wife of a radio station owner.

"She was sort of Lucy's nemesis" because both had young sons, Singleton said in a 2005 interview for the Archive of American Television of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Foundation. "There was a rivalry there but she had to be nice, Lucy had to be nice to Caroline, because her husband owned the radio station."

Harpo Marx was the guest star in one episode.

"Harpo played a concert for us afterward," Singleton said, adding that she loved the episode "I was one of the blondes he was chasing!"

Fred and Ethel Mertz, played by William Frawley and Vivian Vance, were the Ricardos closest friends on the show. Frawley died in 1966 and Vance in 1979.

On set, Lucille Ball was nice to Singleton but she was tough when it came to the show.

Actors were replaced "if she didn't like you or you made a mistake or you flopped," Singleton said.

"It was a very difficult show to work, it was challenging," Singleton said, with only a few days of rehearsal and constant script changes.

Born in Brooklyn, Singleton was a professional ballet dancer in her teens, and later became a singer and radio actress.

Singleton also played Margaret Williams on the 1960s sitcom "My Three Sons" and she appeared on dozens of other TV shows in the 1950s, 60s and 70s, including another Lucille Ball program, "Here's Lucy," ''Perry Mason," ''All in the Family," and "Days of Our Lives."

She was married to comedy writer Charlie Isaacs for 61 years before his death in 2002.

What You Might Not Remember About Affiliate Revenue | Successful ...

Affiliate marketing is a great way to make money on the internet. It can be rather complex for newcomers, if they don?t have the right information to get started. Use the tips provided in this article to start your affiliate marketing business, the right way for maximum success.

In writing reviews for affiliate marketing, make your reviews visually appealing. That is, make sure your blog or site has a pleasing design, and use photos, graphics and/or videos to keep your reviews entertaining and break up text. Part of earning people?s trust and esteem is giving them a pleasant experience, and the visual aspect of your reviews is an important contributor to that. People are visual creatures, so don?t make it a strain or a pain to read your reviews, and people will be more willing to keep reading.

Keep affiliate marketing sites organized by tagging all of the posts. Tags help visitors find the content important to them. It also helps search engines understand which keywords are relevant to the site. Make the tags as descriptive as possible in order to generate traffic to the site and increase profits.

The way to analyze any potential affiliate marketing program is to weigh the potential returns versus the costs. It is important to go beyond simple dollars and cents in this analysis. A cheap affiliate program that requires tons of work from the webmaster is not as cheap as it appears. A profitable program that annoys and alienates website visitors may cost more business than it brings in.

A good tip for affiliate marketers is to come up with a catchy name for their website in order to capture the attention of potential visitors. The name should reflect the content of your site as well as the types of products you are promoting to lure in visitors that are likely to become customers.

Place keywords in website content. By doing this, the search engines will recognize that your site is probably related to certain keywords and rank the site accordingly. But take care to do this naturally; abnormal keyword stuffing seems unnatural and unreadable to some people. Just use the keywords in a communicative way.

Diversify your affiliate marketing strategy; do not put all of your advertising eggs in a single basket. No matter how tightly you focus on a particular niche, you should be able to find more than one affiliate to partner with. Maintaining good relationships with multiple affiliates will give you a safety net in case one advertiser ceases to be profitable.

Pay attention to the tax laws in the state you are in. Many states have recently changed their laws regarding internet sellers, and this may affect your business. Looking up the laws in your area can help you save money and prevent issues with tax forms in the future.

If you are creating an affiliate marketing program, be sure to give your affiliates a wide selection of powerful tracking tools. This makes it easier for them to see what links are working and what aren?t, which means better profits for you as well. Also, more powerful tools will attract more experienced marketers.

As previously mentioned, it can be difficult for a new marketer to understand the best way to use affiliate marketing to make money. The tips provided in this article are available to help you get started on the process. Starting your business the right way, will maximize your success and your profits.

Hot Yankees breeze past Indians

By MIKE FITZPATRICK

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 10:43 p.m. ET June 25, 2012

NEW YORK (AP) - Robinson Cano and Hiroki Kuroda have both rebounded from slow starts, two big reasons the New York Yankees are on such a merry roll.

Cano homered and drove in three runs to extend his recent tear, Kuroda took a shutout into the eighth inning and New York beat the Cleveland Indians 7-1 on Monday night.

Nick Swisher and Dewayne Wise also went deep for the homer-happy Yankees, who opened a seven-game homestand against the top two teams in the AL Central with their third consecutive victory and 13th in 16 games. After winning an intense Subway Series across town against the Mets over the weekend, New York roughed up Josh Tomlin (3-5) early and breezed the rest of the way.

"Everything's just real chill right now," Swisher said. "Everything's just real mellow. We're having a good time."

Cano hit a tiebreaking homer in the eighth inning Sunday night at Citi Field and picked up right where he left off in this one. He smacked a two-run double in the first inning and a solo homer in the third to the short porch in right.

"It feels good. Everything is connecting," said Cano, who raised his batting average with runners in scoring position to .164.

After slumping early this season, Cano has hit six of his 17 homers in the last eight games while increasing his overall average to .302. Earlier in the day, the three-time All-Star moved ahead of Texas second baseman Ian Kinsler in fan balloting for the American League squad.

"You can hold him down for a while, but he's going to get hot," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said.

It was a painful night for catcher Carlos Santana and the Indians, who dropped their third in a row following a four-game winning streak. Despite wearing a protective guard, he drilled two foul balls off his right foot during a three-pitch span in the fourth, leaving him on the ground in anguish.

Later, he took a foul ball off his glove hand.

"It was a bad day, but I'll be all right," Santana said.

The scuffling Indians were held to one run for the third straight game, getting outscored 22-3 during that span, after managing a 2-0 victory Friday in Houston.

"Josh didn't have it and Kuroda did," Cleveland manager Manny Acta said. "From the get-go, you could tell Josh didn't have command of his pitches. ... Everything was up and this is the wrong place to pitch behind in the count, up in the zone. Wrong place, wrong team."

Wise added an RBI triple in a rare start and Cano made one of several fine defensive plays to back Kuroda (7-7), who improved to 4-1 with a 1.93 ERA in his last six starts.

The 37-year-old right-hander was rarely in trouble besides the fourth, when he walked the first two batters and still escaped unscathed. He easily handled a lineup loaded with nine left-handed bats, giving up five hits while walking two and striking out seven.

Kuroda was lifted after allowing a single and double to start the eighth, walking off to a warm ovation from the crowd of 42,290.

"It's a great feeling and I'm glad I was able to pitch as I did," Kuroda said through a translator. "The fans expect that."

Jason Kipnis hit a sacrifice fly off Clay Rapada. The effervescent Swisher jogged off the field with a big smile after all five balls in the inning were hit to him in right field, sending him sprinting to both his right and left as the roar from the crowd increased with each play.

"You can always debate whether winning causes fun or fun causes winning," Swisher said. "I feel like we have both of that right now, and when we come to the ballpark we feel we're going to be successful every single day. And it's just a great feeling to have right now."

Swisher followed Cano's homer with one of his own, an opposite-field drive that tucked into the left-field corner. Swisher also connected Sunday night, a three-run shot off a knuckleball from previously untouchable R.A. Dickey.

Wise, making his eighth start of the year, hit a long two-run shot in the second for his first homer with the Yankees. He played center field, where Curtis Granderson had started the first 71 games this season.

Granderson was the designated hitter, and third baseman Alex Rodriguez was given the night off.

"I was just happy to walk in today and see my name in the starting lineup. To be honest, I think the team was more happy than I was," Wise said. "I know my role. These guys in front of me have to play every day. I just need to stay ready."

NOTES: The Bleacher Creatures chanted ex-Yankee Johnny Damon's name when he took his position in left field for Cleveland. Damon (2,750 hits) went 1 for 4 with a double. He said he'd like to reach 3,000 hits but isn't sure he'd try to hang on just to do it. He said bouncing from one team to another every year is getting difficult. ... Educating the Executive Level About the Value of Organizational ...

Posted by Brevard Neely on June 25, 2012 ? Leave a Comment?

Problems with out-of-date or poorly functioning ERP software?often are abundantly clear to anyone working within the system. But a disconnect can arise when those tasked with making decisions about the ERP system don?t actually use the ERP system. After all, it?s a lot easier to make the wrong determination when one only hears about ? rather than experiences ? all of the issues created by the existing software (or lack thereof).

As a kind of hinge between the everyday operations of the company and the C-suite, directors typically find themselves having to educate the executive level not just about the value of ERP systems in general but the importance of conducting ERP implementations the right way. This is as critical as it is tricky. After all, no ERP implementation succeeds without executive buy-in and support. On the other hand, no executive likes being told what to do.

The key to it is simple: show how a new or updated ERP system can save the organization time and money and you?ve got yourself a deal. The harder part is assigning metrics to what can be a somewhat nebulous return ? especially when discussing something as ?soft? as organizational change management or training. After all, how much does it truly cost the company when Joe in Accounting only learns 45-percent of the ERP functionality he needs? What about when Donna?s boss in Purchasing turns a blind eye when she decides to go ahead and continue using Excel instead of the ERP system?

The easy way out of this estimation conundrum is to cut all or most of the organizational change management activities and focus instead on the technical installation aspects. After all, everyone knows that it?s bad if the system doesn?t work and it?s good if it does and can assign numbers to either scenario. Change management? Can be hard to quantify and thus, hard to justify.

Distressingly, organizations consider this ?technology-only? approach far more than you might think. In Panorama?s expert opinion, however, it?s 100-percent wrong. Some points to consider:

  • ERP failure hardly is ever caused by a technical malfunction; it?s caused by lack of usage and adoption. It?s caused by people who don?t know how to use it right, by people who don?t trust it, and by people who don?t care what impact their misuse or nonuse has on the organization on a whole.
  • Organizational change management is as critical to the success of the project as the technical installation but it?s a whole lot easier to screw up. While a technological mishap will quickly be sorted out, the impacts of how organizational change management is handled will affect the organization for all the years it relies upon the system.
  • Organizational change starts from the top. If executives don?t see the value in using the ERP system the right way (or in the system at all), then end-users won?t either. Messaging from the top-level has to be both frequent and consistent. Further, they have to mean it.

While it might be challenging to express these notions to the C-suite, it?s necessary for the health of both the ERP implementation and the organization on a whole to give the guys and gals upstairs some tough love. Greek PM cannot attend EU summit due to surgery

Greece's new prime minister will not be well enough to travel to a critical EU summit in Brussels after undergoing an eye operation, the government said Sunday.

Antonis Samaras, 61, underwent surgery for a detached retina for nearly four hours Saturday, just three days after being sworn in at the head of a three-party coalition government formed after two inconclusive general elections.

The doctor treating the prime minister, Panagiotis Theodosiadis, has ruled out him being able to travel to Brussels for the June 28-29 European Union summit, government spokesman Simos Kedikoglou said.

"Before the surgery, (Samaras) said, 'You do your job, and I do mine, which is to go to the EU summit,'" Theodosiadis said of Samaras. 'I was hoping (Saturday) that he would announce he would not go because it was a very delicate operation. ... He needs to lie at a certain angle for a certain period each day, for at least a week. He can do meetings, but he certainly can't walk," Theodosiadis said, adding that his patient would leave the hospital Monday.

Samaras has appointed new Foreign Minister Dimitris Avramopoulos to head the Greek delegation at the meeting, Kedikoglou said.

The summit could prove a key test of Greek leaders' pledges to renegotiate some terms of the country's international bailout.

Reports that the so-called troika of Greece's lenders ? the European Commission, the European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund ? will postpone the visit of its delegation, originally planned for Monday, were not confirmed by Samaras' office. European Commission spokesman Amadeu Altafaj Tardio said that troika staff "will be moving to Athens starting (Monday)."

The debt inspectors are due to review the country's fiscal situation and resume talks that had been put on hold during the country's nearly two-month political deadlock.

Greece's incoming finance minister, Vassilis Rapanos, was also hospitalized Friday after suffering a collapse. A hospital spokeswoman said he was expected to be discharged either late Monday or Tuesday after further tests. But because his swearing in had to be postponed due to his ill-health, outgoing Finance Minister Giorgos Zanias still holds the title and will attend the summit.

Zanias, who was a key negotiator for Greece's bailout deal before being named to the post, will be accompanied by Development Minister Costis Hatzidakis and Alternative Finance Minister Christos Staikouras.

Zanias himself had suffered chest pains and high blood pressure and was hospitalized in October at an EU summit, where he had accompanied then-Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos. The doctors had said he had suffered an anxiety attack. Four days later, an adviser to then-Prime Minister George Papandreou suffered a heart attack during negotiations on Greece's second bailout deal.

Greece has been dependent since May 2010 on funds from two international rescue loan deals with other European Union countries and the International Monetary Fund, in return for which it imposed a series of deep spending cuts and tax hikes.

Anti-bailout parties made massive gains in Greece's May 6 and June 17 elections, with Greeks furious at the drop in living standards by measures that have left the country struggling through a fifth year of recession and sent unemployment spiraling to above 22 percent.

Samaras' conservative New Democracy party came first in both elections, but without enough votes to govern alone. Coalition talks collapsed after 10 days in May, leading to the second ballot.

New Democracy is now in a power-sharing government with longtime socialist PASOK rivals and the small Democratic Left.

The new government on Saturday issued a policy statement outlining what it aims to change in its bailout conditions, saying it would seek to repeal some taxes, halt layoffs and extend by two years the mid-2014 deadline for tough austerity measures.

"The general aim is no more cuts to salaries and pensions, no more taxes," the statement said, adding the government would not carry out any public sector layoffs.

Whether the government can deliver on its pledges will depend on how they are viewed by Greece's international creditors. Germany, the largest single contributor to the bailout, has repeatedly said Athens must stick to its austerity targets.

German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble repeated this view Sunday, in an interview to newspaper Bild am Sonntag.

"It must now be the most important task of Prime Minister Samaras' new government to swiftly and immediately implement the agreed program without hesitation or asking, yet again, what the others could do in addition for Greece," German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble was quoted as saying. "The ball is in Greece's field; it is in their hands to achieve that Europe's citizens can regain trust. But this will only be achieved through concrete measures and actions."

The Sunday tabloid published a survey on Greece that it had commissioned with Italy's Corriere della Sera, Spain's ABC and France's Le Journal Du Dimanche.

In it, 78 percent of the Germans polled, 65 percent of the French and about a half of the Italians said Greece should leave the eurozone if it fails to pay its debt.

2012 Ford F-150 Harley-Davidson Review

I would argue that most Harley-Davison riders want to be noticed, often doing so by shattering the already tattered calm of the city.

The same likely holds true for buyers of the 2012 Ford F-150 Harley-Davidson edition. They want to be noticed too, and this 4x4 pickup has the goods to draw attention; fortunately with less auditory stimulation than the two-wheeled variants. Still, this is one mean sounding truck.

Genuine Harley-Davidson inspiration
Ford reports that nearly every member of their Harley-Davidson F-150 team is a Harley owner. No fakes here. The team has taken the 2012 F-150 H-D edition further along the single track than any of the previous versions.

In fact, they've adopted a snakeskin theme to accent the leather upholstery and bodyside graphics, inspired by tank inserts on premium-level Harley-Davidson motorcycles. Along with authentic H-D badging inside and out, Ford has fitted the H-D F-150 with 22" machined aluminum wheels with painted accents inspired by Harley motorcycle wheels.

Along with the big wheels, Ford has given the H-D a lowered appearance and equipped it with power- deployable running boards. They also chose Harley-Davidson White Platinum tri-coat paint to distinguish the 2012 F-150 H-D. This is the first year that white has been offered.

Finally, a unique six-slat chrome grille adorns the front of the truck. The slats are intended to resemble the cooling fins of the fabled V-twin air-cooled Harley-Davidson engine. Naturally, the engine behind the grille is something of a monster by comparison.

Big truck - big power
The massive 6.2L SOHC V8 features variable cam timing and sequential electronic fuel injection to produce 411 hp @ 5,500 rpm and 434 lb-ft of torque at 4,500 rpm. Those are impressive numbers arising from the big-bore architecture of Ford's iron block powerplant.

No turbocharging or ultra sophisticated technology here; just hedonistic power produced the old fashion way - with cubic inches. Of course, power comes at a price - ask any dictator - and that price is paid at the pumps. My in-town average economy generally exceeded 20L/100km.

The thirsty powerplant unleashes its might into a 6-speed automatic transmission that feeds power to the rear wheels unless the electronically-activated four-wheel-drive system is engaged. As such, the driver can select all-wheel drive (4A), four-wheel drive high range (4H) or four-wheel drive low range (4L).

Mounted on the side of the shift lever is a small rocker switch that enables the manual selection of gears. This setup works remarkably well, allowing drivers full control of the transmission with nothing more than the touch of a thumb.

Also on the shifter is a small button to activate a tow/haul mode to assist the truck in motivating a caboose. And thanks to a tow rating of 3,400 kg (or 7,500 lbs), that caboose can be of significant substance.

Of course, luxurious trucks aren't all about work; they're about comfort as well, and the F-150 H-D epitomizes that attribute.

Within the Harley cabin
The H-D F-150 is laden with comfort, luxury and convenience. Its cabin is roomier than living rooms in most condo developments. Front- and rear-seat accommodations are expansive and heated; the front perches being cooled as well to ensure the utmost in trucking bliss.

The four-wheeled Harley is replete with Ford's latest SYNC technology and voice-activated navigation system paired with an 8" LCD screen that doubles as a backup camera. The system can even play DVDs when the vehicle is in Park.

Lest one should have to climb into the cab after a long day atop a Road King, the automatic deploying running board drops into place upon the opening of a door. Once inside, the delight begins.

Behind the snakeskin wheel
There's ferocious power, and plenty of it. This truck hauls ass. I'm not sure how to put it any more succinctly - or elegantly for that matter. Off-the-line performance is herculean while life in the passing lane is mind-bending for such a behemoth.

Like the shattering tumult of straight-piped Harleys, the big F-150 emits a menacing exhaust staccato on its way to redline that doesn't abide by expectations. Under more conservative administration though, it speaks in deep, soothing murmurs.

The sense of calmness is further enhanced by the notable absence of road and wind noise in the plush environs. This, along with the vehicle's absorbent yet firm ride quality, imparts an aura of delight as one takes to the highway.

Still, there's no mistaking the fact that the underpinnings are those of a 4WD truck. This is especially apparent when the rear wheels encounter disagreeable sections of roadway. It's also apparent that agility and nimbleness are not strengths to be lauded. But hey, this isn't that sort of vehicle.

The F-150 H-D wrap
The 2012 Ford F-150 Harley-Davidson is a unique offering by Ford in conjunction with Harley-Davidson. It's a luxurious truck cross-bred with the famous - near mythical - motorcycle.

I enjoyed driving this rolling exhibit of Americana, albeit being noticed wasn't my desire. The truck garnered attention, even when parked outside my abode where many dog walkers stopped to give it the once-over.

Of course, rolling exhibits aren't generally inexpensive, and such is the case with my tester given its MSRP of $65,749.

Woman Buys Goodwill Jeans, Finds Diamond Ring in Pocket, Seeks Original Owner

Deb Thompson's Monday trip to a Coon Rapids, Minn., Goodwill store, netted her a $4 pair of jeans ... with a diamond ring inside worth over $6,000.

Ironically, she picked out that particular pair because her daughter liked the "bling" - fake diamonds - on some of the embroidery. Little did she know.

She discovered the ring in the pocket while trying them on at home.

"I took the ring out of my pocket and sat on the floor with my daughter and her fiancé. I put my arm out in the center, and I opened it in my palm and we all just went, 'Wow. Oh my God," Thompson recalled to ABC News.

Deb Thompson

All Thompson could think was, "Oh geez, somebody lost their ring. The husband or fiancé must be out there saying, 'You're not getting another one!'"

When she first found the ring, Thompson contacted her local ABC affiliate in an attempt to find the owner. She then had the thing appraised.

Not only was the diamond ring real, it was worth $6,500.

Now Thompson, of Ham Lake, Minn., is reaching out via Facebook and working with Goodwill to try to find the engagement ring's original owner.

Sadly/amusingly, seven people have come forward.

Thompson is leaving the background-checking up to Goodwill. She did, however, have a very specific way she'd like the scenario to end.

"This is how I see this whole story ending: Somebody comes forward, says they lost the ring, says they're insured and have the papers to prove it."

"That's how I'm hoping this ends. Only time will tell."

Study shows stagnating life expectancies in US

Thursday, June 21, 2012

Despite modest gains in lifespan over the past century, the United States still trails many of the world's countries when it comes to life expectancy, and its poorest citizens live approximately five years less than more affluent persons, according to a new study from Rice University and the University Colorado at Boulder.

The study, "Stagnating Life Expectancies and Future Prospects in an Age of Uncertainty," used time-series analysis to evaluate historical data on U.S. mortality from the Human Mortality Database. The study authors reviewed data from 1930 through 2000 to identify trends in mortality over time and forecast life expectancy to the year 2055. Their research will be published in an upcoming issue of Social Science Quarterly.

Although the researchers found that the U.S. can expect very moderate gains in coming years (less than an additional three years through 2055), the U.S. still trails its developed counterparts in life expectancy. For example, the average life expectancy in the U.S. for a person born today is is 78.49, which is significantly lower than people born in Monaco, Macau and Japan, which have the three highest life expectancies (89.68, 84.43 and 83.91 years, respectively). In addition, the most deprived U.S. citizens tend to live five years less than their more affluent countrymen, according to Justin Denney, Rice assistant professor of sociology, who was principal author for the study.

Denney said that in 1930, average life expectancy in the United States was 59.85. By 2000, it rose to 77.1 years. "But when broken down, these numbers show that those gains were mostly experienced between 1930 the 1950s and 1960s," he said. "Since that time, gains in life expectancy have flattened out.

"During periods of expansion in length of life, a similar expansion has occurred between more and less advantaged groups ? the rich get richer, the poor get poorer, inequality grows and life expectancy is dramatically impacted," Denney said. "And despite disproportionate spending on health care, life expectancy in the U.S. continues to fall down the ladder of international rankings of length of life. It goes to show that prosperity doesn't necessarily equal long-term health."

Denney said many of the chronic conditions that have led to smaller gains in life expectancy are more easily treated when people are more financially stable. He said the study shows "the ugly side of inequality," and he hopes it will draw attention to the fact that more needs to be done to address stagnating life expectancies in the U.S. and eliminate inequalities in the U.S.

"Even in uncertain times, it is important to look forward in preparing for the needs of future populations," Denney said. "The results presented here underscore the relevance of policy and health initiatives aimed at improving the nation's health and reveal important insight into possible limits to mortality improvement over the next five decades."
