Former Penn State star Lydell Mitchell visited Joe Paterno about a week and a half ago, hoping to get just a moment with his ailing coach.

After an emotional hour and a half, Mitchell said goodbye and told Paterno that he would always have the support of his players.

"I said, 'Hey, man, we love you.' We'll fight the fight for him," Mitchell said Sunday after Paterno died at age 85.

Mitchell says Paterno's legacy "will always be intact because we won't let Joe's legacy die."

Paterno died less than three months after he was ousted amid a child sex abuse scandal involving one of his former assistants.

Former Penn State tight end Mickey Shuler says, "It's just sad because I think he died from other things than lung cancer."

Nortel execs say Deloitte approved of accounting

TORONTO (Reuters) ? Defence lawyers for three former Nortel executives charged with fiddling with balance sheets to trigger bonus payments on Thursday said the telecom equipment company's external auditor knew about major accounting adjustments and signed off on them. The evidence submitted by defense attorney David Porter undermines the Crown's submission that former Chief Executive Frank Dunn, former Chief Financial Officer Douglas Beatty and former Controller Michael Gollogly had engaged in an elaborate fraud at the once-mighty company.

TransCanada open to building Keystone in segments

CALGARY, Alberta (Reuters) - TransCanada Corp may build a $2 billion southern portion of its Keystone XL oil pipeline first following the initial rejection of the full-blown project, which would mesh with one of President Barack Obama's goals but put it in direct competition with another major proposal. TransCanada had broached the idea of constructing the Gulf Coast expansion part of the Canada-to-Texas oil pipeline before as a way to help alleviate an oil glut at the Cushing, Oklahoma, storage hub and get more crude to Texas refineries, but Chief Executive Russ Girling said it has now gained in priority.

Republicans fume as Keystone oil pipeline rejected

WASHINGTON/CALGARY, Alberta (Reuters) - The Obama Administration rejected the Keystone oil pipeline on Wednesday, a move that Republicans decried for sacrificing jobs and energy security in order to shore up the president's environmental base before elections. President Barack Obama said the administration denied TransCanada's application for the $7 billion Canada-to-Texas oil sands pipeline because there was not enough time to review an alternate route that would avoid a sensitive aquifer in Nebraska -- within a 60-day window set by Congress.

Enbridge's deal with B.C. native group collapses

CALGARY, Alberta (Reuters) - Enbridge Inc's sole public deal with a native group along the route of the proposed C$5.5 billion ($5.42 billion) Northern Gateway pipeline collapsed after chiefs of the Gitxsan First Nation rejected the offer, but a spokesman for the company said on Wednesday new talks are expected. According to local media, Gitxsan hereditary chiefs voted 28-8 against accepting the agreement signed last month between Enbridge and the Gitxsan treaty office. The deal would have seen the First Nation take a slice of a 10 percent equity stake in the pipeline the company has offered to native groups.

Europe hasn't fully committed to IMF: Flaherty

GATINEAU, Quebec (Reuters) - Europe needs to cough up a lot more than $200 billion to the International Monetary Fund before calling on others to boost the international lender's funding capacity to deal with the fallout from the European debt crisis, Canadian Finance Minister Jim Flaherty said on Wednesday. "Our view has been...that Europeans must fully commit their own resources to solving their own European crisis before others ought to be called upon to make any contribution," the minister told reporters in Gatineau, Quebec, across the river from Ottawa.

Farmers tiptoe into newly opened Canada wheat market

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (Reuters) - As some of the world's biggest grain traders fan out across Canada's Prairies to compete openly for farmers' wheat and barley for the first time since World War II, they're finding more farmers like Paul Balicki than Stephen Vandervalk. Balicki, from Saskatchewan, says he's been unimpressed with early offers to buy the spring wheat he plans to grow this year, which he's been required to sell to the Canadian Wheat Board since 1943. Like many of the region's 100,000 farmers, most of whom have no memory of a free-market system, change comes hard.

Analysis: Nortel case delay highlights Canada crime approach

TORONTO (Reuters) - The years-long delay in bringing three former Nortel Networks executives to trial for fraud has reinforced Canada's well-earned reputation as a laggard in markets enforcement, particularly when compared with the United States, its critics say. Jurisdictional issues, lack of personnel and a national police task force that has not produced results all contribute to what lawyers and academics say is Canada's dysfunctional approach to prosecuting white-collar crime.

Bank of Canada holds rates, sees faster recovery

OTTAWA (Reuters) - The Bank of Canada held its key policy rate at 1 percent on Tuesday, but forecast a faster Canadian recovery than expected despite an increasingly worrying outlook for the global economy. Governor Mark Carney has held the central bank's rate unchanged for 16 months, the longest period without a rate change since the bank began targeting the overnight rate in 1994. A below-inflation 1 percent rate is providing considerable stimulus to the domestic economy, it says.

Government ready to intervene on housing, but not now: Flaherty

OTTAWA (Reuters) - The Canadian government is watching the housing market closely and is ready to intervene if necessary, but is not about to do so now, Finance Minister Jim Flaherty said on Tuesday, noting he saw indications of softening in the market. He was speaking to reporters after the Bank of Canada said that very favorable credit conditions were expected to buttress housing activity, and that Canada's ratio of household debt to income was expected to rise further.

Canada "has allies' confidence" despite spy case

OTTAWA (Reuters) - Canada still enjoys the confidence of its allies despite the arrest of a Canadian naval intelligence officer charged with handing over secrets to an unnamed country, Defence Minister Peter MacKay said on Tuesday. Jeffrey Paul Delisle faces a charges of giving "a foreign entity" secret information between July 6, 2007 and Jan 13, 2012. He was arrested in Halifax, Nova Scotia and will stay in jail until his next hearing on Jan 25.

SiriusXM now available on Canadian Sonos systems

Sonos sound system with Android app

Sonos, the Android-friendly speaker system, has been able to stream SiriusXM Radio since 2007, but only in limited geographies. Today, Sirius announced that Canadian subscribers can now remotely stream their favourite stations out to the Wi-Fi-enabled sound system.

You can check out our full review of the Sonos over here, if you were thinking of picking one up. I've spent a bit of time with it myself, and I was definitely impressed, and it works great from your phone. It's really ideal for bigger homes where you want to have consistent music across multiple rooms, since the whole family of products talks to one another wirelessly. Of course, that gets a little pricy for the speakers alone, and then if you want something like Sirius, then you're also paying subscription fees on top of that, but hey - if you love your music, this is one smart way to get it into your home without the hassle of wires.

Us poor saps in Canada are usually subject to limited content licenses, so it's no surprise to see a delay here, but when it comes to music, there's really not much we don't have access to anymore. So what's the hold-up, Pandora? Slacker and Rdio are doing business up here just fine.

Head over to Sonos to snag your system, Sirius to start subscribing, and if you're already a part of the sister service, XM Radio, you should be able to plug in to Sonos later on this year.

PSU board meets for 1st time since firing Paterno (AP)

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. ? Penn State's trustees fired coach Joe Paterno as outrage boiled up over the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal.

Now the trustees are the ones being criticized.

The embattled 32-member board meets Friday, its first gathering since November and the frantic first week after child sex abuse charges were filed against Sandusky, Penn State's retired defensive coordinator.

Paterno was dismissed Nov. 9, the same day school President Graham Spanier also departed under pressure. The trustees met two days later, pledging to search for the truth.

Now some alumni and former players are wondering whether the trustees have been up front with them, and are questioning why Paterno was ousted with a full airing of the facts.

How One London Hotel's Ratings Skyrocketed After It Started Paying Attention To Its TripAdvisor Reviews

The St. Ermin's Hotel in Central London

For anyone planning a vacation, travel website TripAdvisor's customer-written hotel reviews can be a valuable resource.

But another group has also started paying close attention to what TripAdvisor's reviewers have to say--the owners and management teams that run hotel properties.

In the case of one ailing hotel in Central London, the website's honest insights turned out to be an essential tool for management to assess the property and improve the customer experience.

Even before buying the antiquated St. Ermin's Hotel in the St. James Park section of Central London in May 2010, real estate developer Amerimar Enterprises paid close attention to the hotel's TripAdvisor reviews.

"We were presented with a situation to potentially purchase the hotel, and what we did, frankly, is what we do in every situation where it's an existing property: look at what people are saying on TripAdvisor," said St. Ermin's co-owner and COO Jon Cummins. "What we saw was that customers were saying the hotel was terrific from a location standpoint, and it was a lovely physical asset, but it was in dire need of renovation."

At the time Amerimar purchased the decrepit 275-room property, the hotel was ranked 480 out of around 1,100 Central London hotels on TripAdvisor.

But after a major four-month, $46 million renovation project, St. Ermin's soon skyrocketed to number 25 in TripAdvisor's Central London rankings, and later jumped to number 18. It's currently sitting at number 29, and receives mostly positive reviews.

It was not just the physical overhaul that had customers writing up stellar reviews. Thanks to guidance from TripAdvisor, many aspects of the hotel's service have also changed, Cummins said.

"It's like having a job review every day and in the business we are in--selling hotel rooms--it's very helpful feedback for us," Cummins said. "We're able to use that feedback to determine areas where there are opportunities to improve, and also to recognize members of our team who are doing great jobs."

"We have completely changed our approach to service, and many staff that had been at the property have done a complete '180' in the way they deal with customers," he added.

Cummins said that he and many other members of the hotel's senior management team checked TripAdvisor's reviews on a daily basis. Not only do they digest the feedback on a general level, but in cases where a guest complains about a specific issue, the St. Ermin's team will attempt to identify and contact him to address the complaint.

The hotel's marketing team has also taken advantage of the wealth of information on the hotel review site.

After reading a rave write-up of a "hen party" at St. Ermin's (that's a bachelorette bash in the UK), the hotel created a tailored package for such getaways.

And more generally, positive feedback has helped the hotel identify some of its own strengths to tout for potential guests.

"When you see the same themes over and over--things we are doing well--it's a benefit to us from a marketing standpoint," Cummins explained. "At the end of the day, our goal is to differentiate ourselves from the competition, because that's what we believe gives us the best results."
