PHILADELPHIA (AP) ? After nine years and two grand jury reports, prosecutors have brought a landmark case to trial that explores how the Archdiocese of Philadelphia dealt with child sex-abuse complaints against scores of Roman Catholic priests.
Monsignor William Lynn is the first U.S. church official ever charged over his handling of abuse complaints. He supervised more than 800 priests as the secretary for clergy in Philadelphia from 1992 to 2004.
Prosecutors charge that Lynn kept dangerous priests in parish work around children to protect the church's reputation and avoid scandal. They say the church kept secret files dating to 1948 that show a long-standing conspiracy to doubt sex abuse victims and protect priests.
Assistant District Attorney Jacqueline Coelho called the case "a battle between right and wrong within the archdiocese and the office of secretary for clergy."
But defense lawyer Thomas Bergstrom said Monday that Lynn had the "ugly job" of overseeing sex abuse complaints but that Cardinal Anthony Bevilacqua alone determined priest assignments and transfers.
"There is documentary evidence that the sexual abuse of children happened in the Catholic Church," Bergstrom said. "We're not going to run from that. He (Lynn), perhaps alone, is the one who tried to correct it."
Lynn, 61, appeared solemn in court, where he has appeared often the past few months for pretrial hearings and jury selection. He has been under investigation for eight years, through two grand jury investigations that blasted Bevilacqua and his successor, Cardinal Justin Rigali, saying they covered up child sex complaints lodged against more than 60 priests.
But Lynn was the only supervisor charged. If convicted of two counts each of conspiracy and child endangerment, Lynn faces up to 28 years in prison.
Bevilacqua died in January, although the jury might see a videotaped deposition he gave weeks earlier. The trial could last several months.
Besides Lynn, Rev. James Brennan is on trial, accused of raping a 14-year-old boy in 1996. Both men entered not guilty pleas Monday. A third defendant, defrocked priest Edward Avery, pleaded guilty last week to charges in the case.
Defense lawyers have long planned to attack the credibility of the two accusers, who have struggled with drug addiction and have criminal records. But that strategy took something of a hit when Avery entered the surprise guilty plea Thursday.
Avery, who moonlighted as a disc jockey and adopted six Hmong children during his years in the priesthood, admitted that he sexually assaulted a 10-year-old altar boy in a church sacristy in 1999. That victim accused another priest and his sixth-grade teacher of raping him during his parochial school years. They will go on trial separately because neither was an archdiocesan priest reporting to Lynn.
Brennan's accuser has convictions for theft and filing a false police report and called none other than the person he accused of abusing him when he needed to do court-ordered community service, a defense lawyer said.
"If you don't believe (him) ... the case is over," said lawyer William Brennan, who is not related to his client.
Avery's plea also acknowledged that the archdiocese kept him in ministry despite being aware of an earlier complaint. That complaint, dating to 1992, was detailed in court Monday by the first witness to take the stand in the trial.
A Philadelphia detective read a 1992 letter from a medical student that said Avery had once gotten him drunk and molested him after a DJ stint at a West Philadelphia nightclub and later on a ski trip.
"I do not want money or any kind of media scandal," the accuser wrote. "I need to know that he has been evaluated and treated for this disorder and his threat to other impressionable young men is gone."
The archdiocese interviewed Avery, who denied the allegations before saying they could have happened when he was drunk.
"I thought he was a potential (priest). I was so good to him," Avery told Lynn and Bishop Joseph Cistone in a 1992 interview, according to an archdiocesan memo read in court.
Avery was sent for inpatient therapy for eight months before returning to the ministry. He sexually assaulted the altar boy seven years later, he admitted Thursday.

ScienceDaily (Mar. 26, 2012) ? Adding vorapaxar, an investigational platelet blocker, to standard antiplatelet therapy significantly reduces the risk of recurrent cardiovascular events in patients with known atherosclerosis, a hardening and narrowing of the arteries, according to research presented March 26 at the American College of Cardiology's 61st Annual Scientific Session. The Scientific Session, the premier cardiovascular medical meeting, brings cardiovascular professionals together to further advances in the field.
Each year, more than a million Americans suffer a heart attack. For those who survive, doctors routinely prescribe aspirin therapy to help prevent blood clot formation in the arteries that can lead to another heart attack. Other platelet blockers, such as clopidogrel, are often added for as long as a year but it is unclear whether adding any platelet blocker to aspirin beyond this timeframe is useful. Despite such therapies, survivors of heart attack have an almost 15 percent chance of having another atherosclerosis-related event that brings them to the hospital within a year.
Now, researchers led by the TIMI Study Group at Brigham & Women's Hospital in Boston, Mass. have shown, for the first time, that adding a new antiplatelet agent on top of standard therapy, including aspirin, is effective for long-term secondary prevention in stable patients with a prior heart attack. When used with aspirin and other standard antiplatelet therapy in a broad group of patients with previous heart attack, stroke or peripheral arterial disease, vorapaxar reduced the risk of cardiovascular death, heart attack or stroke by an additional 13 percent (9.3 vs. 10.5 percent at three years, p<0.001). This reduction in new cardiovascular events appeared greatest in patients with prior heart attack, among whom there was a 20 percent decline in these events (p<0.001).
Vorapaxar is the first of a new class of investigational Protease Activated Receptor 1 (PAR-1) thrombin receptor antagonists. Unlike other antithrombotic drugs, vorapaxar blocks thrombin from stimulating platelets to stick together and create clots. Blood thinners, like coumadin, and other antiplatelets like aspirin or clopidogrel, do not directly target these same actions of thrombin.
"In the lab, we have seen very compelling science showing the importance of thrombin's action on platelets causing blood clots in arteries," said David A. Morrow, MD, MPH, senior investigator at the TIMI Study Group, director of the Samuel A. Levine Cardiac Unit at Brigham & Women's Hospital, and the study's lead investigator. "This is the first study to show definitively that blocking this pathway reduces the risk of suffering another cardiovascular event."
This randomized, double blind, placebo-controlled, multinational study followed 26,449 patients for more than two years while receiving standard antiplatelet therapy for established atherosclerosis, including previous heart attack (n=17,779), stroke (n=4,883), or atherosclerotic narrowing in the arteries of the legs (n=3,787). Participants were randomly assigned to either take the investigational platelet blocker (2.5 mg orally once daily) with standard therapy, or a placebo with standard therapy.
"It's exciting to find clearly that we can reduce the risk of a recurrent thrombotic event by adding another platelet inhibitor to aspirin over the long-term," Dr. Morrow said. "Adding this new class of antiplatelet therapy reduced the risk of new cardiac events in stable patients, especially among the subset of patients with a prior heart attack."
Dr. Morrow commented that if vorapaxar becomes available for clinical use, it does not appear suitable for everyone with atherosclerosis. "Of the groups we studied, the benefit was compelling to us only in patients with a prior heart attack," said Dr. Morrow. In addition, this new therapy was found to increase the risk of severe bleeding, including intracranial bleeding. The risk of intracranial bleeding was highest among patients who have suffered from previous strokes; vorapaxar would likely not be appropriate for stroke victims or patients at high risk of bleeding. Stroke patients who were enrolled in the study ended their participation early after advice by the study's data and safety monitoring board.
Patients who took vorapaxar had significantly more bleeding events (GUSTO moderate or severe bleeding at three years 4.2 percent with vorapaxar vs. 2.5 percent with placebo, p<0.001). Intracranial hemorrhage was higher with vorapaxar than placebo (1.0 vs. 0.5 percent, p<0.001) with lower overall rates in patients with no history of stroke (3 years: 0.6 percent with vorapaxar vs. 0.4 percent with placebo, p=0.049).
Dr. Morrow and his team look forward to learning more from this very rich dataset to identify the patients who may have the best balance of benefit vs. bleeding risk with this agent.
The study was funded by Merck Research Laboratories. Dr. Morrow has received research grant support and consulting fees from Merck and other manufacturers of antiplatelet and anticoagulant therapies.
This study will be simultaneously published in New England Journal of Medicine and will be released online at the time of presentation.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Rick Santorum picked up at least eight convention delegates by winning the Republican presidential primary in Louisiana.
Santorum's haul was limited by Louisiana's rules for awarding delegates. The state has a total of 46 delegates to the party's national convention, but only 20 were at stake in the primary, and they were awarded in proportion to the statewide vote.
An additional 23 delegates will be selected at the Louisiana state GOP convention in June. The final three delegates are Louisiana's members of the Republican National Committee.
Mitt Romney leads the overall race for delegates with 563, followed by Santorum with 271, Newt Gingrich with 135 and Ron Paul with 50.
It takes 1,144 delegates to win the Republican nomination to take on President Barack Obama.

Let us play a game?comparing love relationships with six common situations that a vehicle can find itself in.
1.THE VEHICLE WITH A DEAD BATTERY
When a vehicle has a dead battery, it cannot function. The vehicle may be of the highest quality but it simply cannot start and move on its own. Everything else in the engine may be in perfect order but it cannot move. Some marriages are like that.
We tend to think that if a marriage is not working then love is dead. But there can be love and respect in a marriage and still the marriage may not be working because there is neither fun nor variety. All this marriage needs is a change of battery and it will be on the road ? that is change of environment; a change of routine; a change of attitude and everything will be fine.
2. THE VEHICLE WITH A DEFLATED TYRE
Have you tried to drive a car with a deflated tyre? It is a nightmare. The engine is working; the lights are working; everything is working; three of the tyres are in good shape but that one deflated tyre changes the driving experience totally. This is the picture of a marriage that is allowing little issues to go unresolved. There is resentment and simmering tensions that are being swept under the carpet. They need to be brought into the open and aired.
3.THE VEHICLE THAT HAS RUN OUT OF FUEL
A vehicle without fuel is going nowhere. It is not spoilt but it just won?t move. Put in fuel and it will be back to normal. So, what is the picture of a vehicle that has run out of fuel in a love relationship? This is the relationship without commitment from one or both parties.
It is becoming increasingly common to find relationships in which at least one party has no commitment. The relationship survives because one party is pushing it along without any help from his/her partner. It is a one-sided relationship and it cannot make much progress and the little progress it does make will be very painful and too much work for the party making it work.
4. THE VEHICLE WITH THE WRONG FUEL
A man I know bought an expensive executive salon car and decided to travel with it to Cape Coast. When he got to Mankessim, he drove into the filling station, filled the tank and took off. The brand new car travelled only a few metres from the filling station and stalled.
It would not move any more. What had happened was that his car was a diesel engine but the sound of the engine was so smooth that the service attendants had mistaken it for a petrol engine and filled it with petrol instead of diesel.
It was a costly mistake. The brand new expensive car had to be towed to the garage and the fuel completely drained from the tank and then they had to bleed the engine before it could come back on the road. As I think of it, I realize that a car filled with the wrong fuel is the picture of a relationship that has been hit by cheating by one of the parties.
When there is cheating in a relationship, progress can only be made when the wrong fuel, that is the other relationship, has been drained completely out of the relationship and all links cut off.
5. THE VEHICLE WITHOUT BRAKES
Every now and then, a car develops faulty brakes. One of the incidents that stands out in my mind in my student days at Legon was boarding an Accra Central?-bound tro-tro from the main gate of the university. I got the front seat. The journey was uneventful until we reached the traffic lights at the then Drama Studio, now National Theatre. The light turned red on us; then I heard the driver utter something under his breath and he jumped the red light. I looked at him and he said, ?The brake has failed.? And I looked at the pedals and saw him still pumping the brakes to no avail. So, it is possible to have a vehicle that has no brakes.
It is moving but it cannot stop on its own. In a relationship that can be likened to a vehicle without brakes, conflicts are loud and often lead to a physical fight. Whenever there is anger, none of them is able to exercise self-restraint and they exchange words and insults at the top of their voices and often get physical. But this relationship also has great sex when there is no fight. It is a relationship that has only passion and nothing else. When things are good, sex is passionate and wild.
But there is no respect and there is bad attitude. So it-crashes often and when it does it is dramatic and it draws people from the neighbourhood. Then it is taken to the workshop, straightened and re-sprayed and then it takes off again.
6. THE VEHICLE WITHOUT REVERSE GEAR
This is the relationship that needs the intervention of third parties after every conflict. The parties in this relationship have not learnt how to avert disaster. When there is an issue or a problem, they go at it without restraint and stop only when things have blown out of control and the relationship is on the brink of collapse. They are too proud or immature to deal with the issues and so things remain in limbo until friends, relatives or neighbours intervene ? the couple themselves do not have what it takes to correct what has gone wrong and reconcile.

As any frequent flier can attest, one of the most annoying parts of an already-stressful?airport trip is the need to power down all your electronic devices for long stretches of time during takeoff and landing. The ban was initially put in place by the FAA for safety reasons, but in the years since its inception, even experts have come out and said that banning electronics at any point during a flight is simply silly. It appears as though the FAA has finally decided to listen, and a "fresh look" at the ban and the impact of personal electronics on airplanes will soon be performed.
Most airlines currently prohibit passengers from using cell phones, tablets, and other personal gadgets during runway taxi, takeoff, and landing, and in-flight use must be restricted to devices which aren't communicating with a cellular or data network. Turning your device off for those 15 or 20 minutes ? or sometimes much, much longer, if a delay occurs ? isn't usually a big deal. But if the act itself does nothing in terms of plane safety, it seems like a pointless rule regardless.
It's not just passengers who would benefit from the ban being lifted: Pilots and flight crews now use things such as?iPads and other electronic devices during takeoff and landing. Performing a power cycle on those gadgets several times a day could also be avoided. The FAA isn't hinting at what changes could ultimately take place, but the fact that they're willing to revisit the ban at all is cause for celebration.

LONDON (AP) ? Bolton midfielder Fabrice Muamba remained in critical condition in intensive care Monday, two days after going into cardiac arrest during an FA Cup match at Tottenham.
The 23-year-old Muamba's heart started beating on its own again only when he arrived at a London hospital's heart attack unit Saturday night.
"Fabrice Muamba's heart condition is stable, but he remains critically ill in intensive care," the London Chest Hospital and Bolton said Monday in a joint statement.
The player's fiancee has been issuing pleas on Twitter for the health of Muamba, who proposed on Valentine's Day. The couple has a 3 year-old son, Joshua.
"Fabrice WILL!! Pull through because God is good," Shauna Muamba tweeted. "Love u so much fmuamba keep strong we're praying for u honey ... where there is life there is hope."
Bolton manager Owen Coyle said the former England under-21 player is putting up a "brave fight," adding that the club had been inundated with messages of support, including from David Beckham.
"There is a real hope he can come through this. When situations like this occur there is a real strength, a real unity, a real togetherness ... that has given (the family) an incredible energy," Coyle said outside the east London hospital. "That source of energy that everyone is giving off is really bringing them together as a family and that is important for Fabrice's well being."
Muamba, a former Arsenal and Birmingham player, fled to England with his family in 1999 to escape the civil war in Congo.
"When you look what he has come through in his life already he is a natural fighter. He is a physically fit young man," Coyle said. "If those things can help at all it will be a source of help and encouragement."
Bolton's next match, at Aston Villa on Tuesday in the Premier League, has been postponed. The team is scheduled to play Blackburn on Saturday, and then could face Tottenham again next week in the FA Cup at White Hart Lane to replay the quarterfinal match that was abandoned Saturday.
"I know the decision will have to be made, but the immediate thoughts are with Fabrice," Bolton captain Kevin Davies said about the possibility of Bolton pulling out of the FA Cup. "I'm sure the club will take a stance on it in the next couple of days."
Davies, who visited Muamba in the hospital over the weekend, said the Bolton squad had the option whether to attend training Monday.
At Tottenham, players were due to undergo tests for potential heart defects, with cardiologist Sanjay Sharma saying "the players have all demanded cardiac screening" at a planned routine visit Monday.
"That involves taking a history relating to cardiac symptoms, which include chest pain during exertion or breath which is disproportionate to the amount of exercise being performed and blackouts, (and) asking about a family history because many of these conditions that can cause cardiac arrest are hereditary," Sharma said.
"We then perform a cardiac examination and following that we do an ECG (electrocardiogram) which is an electrical tracing of the heart which looks for electric faults of the heart and a cardiac ultrasound which looks at heart muscle problems or problems with the heart values."
